U.S. intelligence was able to pinpoint Saddam's whereabouts by using satellite tracking to monitor the movements of Tariq Aziz, his spokesman, after Aziz appeared on Iraqi TV Wednesday morning to deny reports that he had been killed or wounded in a separate attack.

When Aziz returned to the compound, President Bush was informed and ordered the attack, which was carried out by Tomahawk cruise missiles and F-117 stealth fighter-bombers.
