That would be the Guardian Council, the Judiciary, and the Rafsanjani and Khamenei group, although the latter figures are more pragmatic.

Most Iranians would welcome an environment that would be conducive to them bringing a change of regime from inside and without any American influence overtones. I really suggest you read Sadra Mackey's book on Iranians to appreciate the depth of Iranian sensitivities to this issue. Consider that one of the main reasons Khomeini started his opposition to Shah was not Islam, but the fact that Shah granted immunity to American personnel in Iran.

I doubt that none violent intervention is the objective for this administration. Their best chance for success in Iran (and later in Iraq) would have been to take Iran into account after all the help that was given by Khatami. Most importantly, if they did not want the hardliners to come to power, they should not have included Iran in "axis of evil". That one sentence did greater damage than you will know.

I am chatting with people in Europe and North Africa who are watching different news channels than you do. It seems that the public has decided Al-Jazeera has become too pro-US and have stopped watching them. The pervailing opinion there is that US is making Iraq as a staging area against Iran and I quote:

They show how much USA hate Iran and they want to go after them after
They are focusing on Iraq and Iran they show details on how USA was the one to mention to Iraq that they should invade Kuwait
They are showing people in Iraq protesting the war
Most of the world TV channels feel for Iraqis
blah
blah
USA is thinking about using the iraqi oil for the next 10 years
10 years!
We wish there was something we could do.

I just thought to give you a bit of feel from Northern Africa, these guys are neither Shia nor have cultrual ties with Iran. So you can only imagine what it must be like in areas closer to Iran.
