I think enough of the world will see that it was the right thing to do, and that will alleviate the long term economic effects you are worried about.

And I am confident that the French position -- that "serious consequences" can be read to mean "no consequences" within a few short months, when they have big economic interests at stake -- will be seen by history for what it was.

The French tried to prevent this day back in the early 1980's by supplying Saddam with nukes. That certainly would have enhanced world security.
