Bush is being judge and executioner. Whatever the "jury" out there thinks he really doesn't care.
Bush's logic, besides wanting oil, a political diversion and to avenge his father, is 9-11 based. If it weren't for 9-11 he would have little if any moral justification for this war. Therefore those who blame Clinton for not invading Iraq are really off-base. But in the minds of many Americans who back Bush, 9-11 gives him the right to sock it to any Arab country he wants, just to show them who's boss. Revenge for 9-11 and Poppy in one, and a huge help to his oil and defense contractor buddies.
This war has its good points and bad, but it makes complete sense this was what we were going to get after 9-11 with Bush in power. What frightens the world is that it doesn't end here, and that military power may go to Bush's head, and to the heads of his followers.
Republican Presidents are usually more willing to go to war because their base traditionally backs military moves. Democrats are more moderate because part of their base are pacifist types. I had to halg-agree with Republicans at this point, though the true justification for this war is very muddy, and there's been a lot of exaggeration going on. We can see how easy Saddam is to beat. Was he really that great a threat to anyone? Maybe 12 years ago but not with his current army. They seem only enough to keep him in power. And where are the WMD? Hopefully not there. But if so, Bush has a lot of explaining to do to the world. But he probably wont even bother. |
