OT - just a few points:

1. The military balance in 1939 was very, very different from today. Germany's military success was due not only to the lack of resolve in the west; Germany was much stronger than any other power. Iraq is a washed up weakling, apart from the WMD if they do indeed exist in any quantity (still to be seen). And military superiority is the only niche where the US shines. We certainly can't dictate economic, political or cultural norms for the planet, especially not now.

2. How could the US unilaterally "go in" to Germany, a modern industrialized country with the abovementioned military forces? Couldn't happen - we barely had a functional air force and navy by then.

"Regime change" on demand is a limited tool at best in foreign affairs. Much of the time it's an academic pipe dream. The fools postulating a followup invasion of Syria and Iran really have no clue how to assess our military abilities against a more prepared opponent, or our capacity to deal with multiple crises and post-conflict occupations.

3. "Saved from WW2" - in addition to Poland, the world would have had to act against Japan in China and Indochina in the 1930's and Italy in Ethiopia. It was a world war, after all. And Soviet expansionism was just as big a threat after the war in its own way (direct occupation and control of other countries). Today we face a multifaceted military and terrorist threat that will still be there once Iraq is safely under our administration.

The fantasy of "one invasion cures all" is just that, a fantasy to justify current events. Hussein is a bad guy who deserves to get smoked. But let's not kid ourselves that it will accomplish much, there are still plenty of other bad guys in nasty corners of the planet. And we burned a lot of bridges in the process.

JMHO as always.
