here are the facts as I see them, I am Jewish and a litlle biased. 1)Yasser Arafat has no reason to want peace. The palestinians are irrelevent on the world stage if they were not the pawns in the ME. Would King Faud and Collin Powell give a hoot about the pallestinians if not for their conflict? Would Yasser Arafat recieve hundreds of millions of dollars from abroad if he was not at war with Isreal? Of course not. Therfore his goal is to mainatin the conflict 2)What benifit does Isreal get by repressing the Palestineans? It is devestating to their economy, there are no huge oil wells in Jerihco, or factorys in Gaza that have any economic value. Heck the Isreali's gave up the Sinai that had HUGE strategic and oil wells to sue for peace. So now they are willing to let thousands die for useless land????. 3) The Arab world, made up mostly of despots, oligarchy's and represive govt's need their boogeyman to rile up the Arab on the street to keep them busy. They wont notice the horrendous life they lead whille their leaders scoot arround in Lamborghinis in Cannes. With all this in mind how can one have constructive peace talks when one side is clearly conflicted about having peace? If you can tell me what motive outside of security that Isreal could possibly have to want to keep and kill palestineans I am all ears. Then ask yourself what motives the pallestinean leadership would gain from getting peace and you will see the problem. As for "The eye for an eye stuff" the fact is that if Pallestineans werent blowing up busses there would be no troops in the territories, and no inocent pallestinians would be getting killed. The Israelis tried to offer the pallestininians 80% of what they requested and yet no peace ensued. Things were so close, and to many forces pulled the peace process into the toilet. The fact still remains that Isreal doesnt TARGET civilians, school children etc. If pallestinians attacked Army bases or ambushed soldiers is one thing. You cant compare the two. Also Id point out that Pallestinians living in ISREAL before the intifada had a much better standard of living, more freedom and made more money then 90% of the Arabs in the Arab world. If the pallestinians were smart they would want to be part of ISREAL, which is a thriving economy and a democracy.
