The error is quite simple. The financial system is built around inflation. Deflation will cause many companies to go bankrupt which causes banks to go bust etc. As people lose faith in the system there is a rush to safety. Lots of people view Gold as the ultimate safe investment, particularly in Asia and Eastern europe. Naturally, this all depends on the level of deflation and the response of major governments to the deflation. As I recall, Homestake mining went up 500% or so when the rest of the market went down in the last depression. Remember ... you mileage may vary.
