When did the West "win the world"? Anyone remember Vietnam? I don't see the West dominating China, India or southeast Asia. Forget about democracy and development in most of Africa. The Middle East seems to be in doubt too. So scratch a few billion souls from the "on our side" list.

Huntington was famous in his earlier days for showcasing the Chilean military as a constructive force for development - in his classic book in 1969.

Oops.

Absolute declarations about the West or Christianity or Islam are so broad, they are meaningless. There is no unified West, no monolithic East, no single international actor called Islam, etc. They are simplistic constructs for cocktail chatter and academic conferences.

The idea that any country or culture can bludgeon its way into lasting world leadership is also destined to fail.
