And the iraqis are putting up a fight too, because they think we are going to steal their oil.
No, Iraqis who are "putting up a fight," if you can call it that, either fear the consequences for themselves of a fall of Saddam's government (the case for some in military leadership positions), don't know that the removal of Saddam's government is inevitable (because Saddam keeps telling them they are strong and will destroy the invaders) and fear the consequences of not remaining loyal to him (the case for many military rank and file and civilians) or believe (because, again, Saddam tells them so) that we are coming to kill or enslave them. He has always controlled the country through fear and control of what the Iraqi people see and hear. He is a classic dictator who, I'm sure, has studied all the models that came before him, from Louis XIV to Hitler and Stalin, and probably fictional totalitarian states as well like that of Orwell's 1984.
As for finding WMDs, I can't imagine we won't. Unless Saddam has some kind of suicidal death wish for himself and his sons and henchmen, he could have prevented all this long ago simply by cooperating with inspectors twelve years ago to demonstrate he has no banned weapons. He could have even enhanced his own image and power in the process. If he really didn't have any, his refusal to cooperate with the UN could only be explained by some insane desire to provoke war and be destroyed. And considering he's never been a religious zealot, it's irrational to think he may be doing just that out of desire for martyrdom in Jihad. |
