Very good post PT and I share your sentiments. I don't think Syria and Iran will come in - but feel in general that America has crossed a Rubicon for ill.

I also think that the people pulling the strings in this Adminstration are playing with fire on all fronts now. I'm quite an old fellow but feel deeply affected by what I've seen since 9/11 and the opportunism of those who would curtail civil liberties. On another thread someone wrote about Iraq being like a communist state (he meant totalitarian I believe) citing 'secret police, torture chambers and so on, and I couldn't help thinking that if people in America are not vigilant the same will happen there - in fact torture now seems to be de riguer, and a Secret Police under Ashcroft is a stones throw away.

The Bushies have so divided society that it's entirely possible that a next generation of terrorists may be home grown - clever, scientific, working in small groups. I'm not talking about militia types at all, but people who see themselves as true patriots and who are prepared to use extreme methods.

I think it's generally accepted in the intelligence community that the Iraq war is going to lead to untold hatred of America abroad and provide fertile ground for the recruitment of terrorists. But they should look to the home front where there is no shortage of brains and idealism
