>>>Let me ask you a couple of questions:<<<
Sure!
>>>1. Why do you want Saddam to continue to own and run Iraq?<<<
I don't. But I don't believe a the government of a member nation of the United Nations should remove another government of a member nation of the United Nations without the support of the United Nations.
I also take into consideration that nearly half of Iraq's population are children under the age of 15, neither of whom should be eliible to look up into the sight of Shock and Awe.
>>>2. Why are you anti-American? You wouldn't believe how mixed my feelings about this war are, but then I see the anti-Americanism of you and your ilk and I'm driven right into the hardcore corner.<<<
Lazarus, I want reasons to be proud of my country. This war is not one of them. I'm further disappointed how our nation historically has treated the smaller nations, oftentimes propping up a dictator like Saddam who'd allow our corporations to strip the resources from those nations while doing little, if anything, for the people who actually owned those resources.
>>>The US isn't responsible for all the world's problems, believe it or not. Not even a significant fraction of them. Yeah, it's done things it shouldn't have, it's been imperialistic at time, it's businesses are greedy (What else is a business supposed to be?), and it's made mistakes. But overall, I'd say it has been a positive force. Germany and Japan are democracies now because of the US.<<<
And they've become wonderful democracies, have they not? Perhaps their example proves what can be accomplished, that warring behavior isn't necessary at all.
>>>If it weren't for the likes of you, South Vietnam would be too.<<<
Laz, this isn't a matter of me. The US never had the support of the South Vietnamese people. How could we have possibly have won a war no one there, except the government which the US installed, wanted to have fought? Those who fought for peace while our soldiers were dying then, you should credit, not discredit. And, yes, that includes me!
>>>The Soviets didn't get to invade and dominate all of Europe because of the US.<<<
It is right and proper for the US to come to the aid of its allies when they are threatened.
>>>Taiwan is independent and a democracy because of the US.<<<
However, Bush's preemptive war strategy now opens the door for China to invade Taiwan.
>>>Technologically, the US is the leading nation. We have developed drugs and preventative strategies that have saved billions.<<<
Indeed, we are. Our science invested wind and solar power, however it is Germany and Japan which are marketing it, this while we are now at war in Iraq. Regarding the drug business, what a great hold the pharmaceutical lobby has on our politicians. And look at the high costs people pay for those drugs.
>>>So why are you against the US?<<<
America is the most beautiful country on the face of the planet. What makes it beautiful is its diversity of people and the opportunities for them.
However when the top five percent of the population take in 60 percent of the wealth and then an administration like Bush's then gives them a tax break, well, I think it's time to consider that we've misorganized those opportunities into opportunities of a few rather than opportunities for the many. Why is it every time the GOP gets hold of the executive branch we see so many small business bankruptcies?
Laz, I could go on and on. But I don't have time.
I'll simply close by writing I want my country to be a true leader in the world, not the world's best bully; I want my country to promote peace, to help end the few dozen conflicts which every day are ongoing throughout the world; I want my country, if it's going to condemn Cuba, to at least make South and Latin American nations better than Cuba; I want my country to appreciate people of color for reasons other than cheap labor; I want my country to address the reasons which breed terrorism, not act like it can smash it to smitherines when it can't.
Ultimately, I want our flag loved in other countries. Right now, it's not. So things must somehow change. And this change will never come if voices such as my own are silent. |
