Photos of dead Iraqis shock Britain

London, March 23

A photograph showing two headless Iraqi soldiers in a trench, beside them a white flag apparently waved in vain, was used in several British newspapers Sunday to illustrate the horrors of war.

The bodies were discovered by allied troops following an assault in the strategic Fao Peninsula in southern Iraq on Saturday, newspapers said.

"For these Iraqi soldiers, their attempt to lay down their weapons came all too late," said the left-wing Sunday Mirror.

"After the TV war ... the reality of war," said the tabloid, in a headline over the picture.

"The dead men's white flag of surrender appeared to have been waved too late," said the right-wing Sunday Telegraph in a caption to its front page photograph.

The centre-left Independent on Sunday and the right-leaning Sunday Times published the same photograph without referring to the white flag.
