yup. Most of the hijackers who were from SA were from a southern area of SA, distant from the capital, known for its extremism.

saudi arabia as you surely know is a huge challenge for the US. The Saud regime is unstable and from what I read uses all the oil money it can get on various social programs and other things to keep the population reasonably happy and not in revolt.

Bin laden hates the ruling family for, among other reasons, allowing the US to have a mil and econ presence there. It's quite likely that prior to the US hunt for the al qaeda people, al qaeda could have toppled the ruling family and taken over. There have been rumors that the Saudi family pays bin laden to leave them alone.

But the us also needs to keep on SA's good side to court their help in keeping oil prices and supply stable. Meanwhile the Saudi family won't do anything to crack down on the terroists, and has likely been funding it anyway.

What a mess.
