Well it might make things "clearer", but whether it moves things closer to the truth is a separate question. You do realize that the book is a work of fiction, don't you?
Look, one doesn't have to be a raving peacenik, or a Stalinist (as the members of the leading peace rally organizer, A.N.S.W.E.R., are) to believe that the Bush Administration has largely mishandled this. The fact is that Hussein and Bin Laden were mortal enemies, and any recent attempts by them to kiss and make up were a direct result of Administration policy post 9/11.
IMO, the only people in this whole affair who have for the most part acquitted themselves admirably are our men and women in uniform. If Clinton had handled things in exactly the same manner, (not that he would have, he's brighter than that) the Right would be all over him. How much of a free ride would the right have given him if he'd called N. Korea on their surreptitious nuclear efforts, only to do nothing when they aggressively expanded them? And this with a government that has shown absolutely no scruples about providing WMD to the highest bidder.
I'm sorry, but I believe that this Administration let personal agendas override policy when they didn't back off and let the U.N. process run it's course and switch the immediate focus to N. Korea. If they had done that, they would have had real credibility, and had some real leverage to use on the Chinese and Russians. Now, whatever happens in Iraq, we have just about zero diplomatic capital left to use on N. Korea. What do we do there, another invasion? |
