Canadians wrote the book on peacekeeping, en route to Egypt in 1956, on the planes ... true factoid ... three dickhead parties of the day - Israel France and the UK - had invaded and seized the canal ...... our PM at the time was Lester Bowles Pearson, he worked day and night for weeks conspiring with Eisenhower on how to fix the situation .... his plan was the one adopted, and for a variety of fascinating reasons [there is a thorough book on this], all diplomacy involved went through the canadian foreign office ..... Lester B got a Nobel peace prize out of it, he and Ike were fast friends for life, though they had opposing interests and positions in many respects [like the Arrow, which Diefenbaker killed when he got in, to appease the US aerospace lobby]
The germans too will be great in this respect, i know a couple and that certainly seems to be where their interest lies .... they just haven't settled into the post-cold war scenario yet, still figuring it out .... but there are many of us - the danes, dutch, irish, kiwis, mexicanos .... the spanish - why not, the people are not aligned with Aznar on the war-first policy |
