This article is clearly a smear job at President Bush. Subtle? Hell no, it is as obvious as the nose on your face. Practically every sentence is intended to leave a negative image of Bush with the average reader, who doesn't even bother to realize just how his reason is being assaulted and his views molded. The article is a beautifully simple example of how the liberal media slant the news.

Let me demonstrate what I mean. You might want to re-read the original article and then read the following analysis. Desired impressions to be left with the reader are in bold.

"Distance From Details May Reflect Bid to Insulate President From Any Early Setbacks"
Bush doesn't really want to hear any negatives about the war.

"White House portrayed President Bush this week as a wartime CEO at a dignified remove from the twists and turns of the attack"
He's above the fray and doesn't really care.

"looked like an effort to insulate Bush from temporary setbacks while setting him up for credit if the invasion ends as the big success"
He's playing politics with the war; wants credit but no blame.

"but he curtly waved off their questions"
He is curt and abrupt and can't be bothered about the war.

"Bush's aides ........ said he was not wakened to be told of the first casualties in the war"
He doesn't really care about our casualties.

"Bush has told visitors he is sleeping well"
Again, he isn't even concerned about the war. You'd think if he cared he wouldn't be able to sleep.

"one of his biggest political assets is his image as a down-home Texas rancher, despite his privileged upbringing and two Ivy League degrees"
Reinforcing the old "silver spoon image".

"every evidence is that his learning curve since 9/11 has been dramatic."
We always knew he was a light-weight mentally. It took 9/11 to wake him up to what people care about.

"[he] did not need to watch TV to understand what the American people think about the decision to use force to disarm the Iraqi regime. Reporters were so puzzled by Fleischer's answer....."
Gee, doesn't he care what people think about the war? Doesn't he know about all the thousands that are protesting?

"As his father did on the first weekend of the 1991 Persian Gulf War, Bush is spending the first weekend of the war at Camp David."
Again, remote, uncaring.

"Although Bush remained largely out of view"
Same. Remote, unwilling to take hard questions.

It takes no imagination to realize how the same article could have been rewritten to be neutral with no bias, and, likewise, could also have been written to betray a conservative, pro-Bush agenda had that been the reporter's objective. And I don't care whether it appeared in a supposedly "conservative" newspaper or not. IMO, it's pure liberal bias.
