When I said we are seeing the failure of that policy, I was talking about the whole foreign policy and not just Saudi. Our stance is really the same all over the map.

Saudi is a special case in that they are so unstable, that they do not let their own people to be part of any major military force. Even Saddam has an army of his own. Not so for the Saudis.

Nor are they as benign as you think. When people do not have weapons, they get creative as to how to establish their objectives. In case of Saudis that means financial support and spread of extreme fringes of Islam (I'd call it fundamentalism, but Wahaabis are way beyond that).

You may be surprised to know that the most friendly middle eastern people to the US right now, after Israelis, are Iranians. I will go over the whys later on, but for now let me say that it is not because of failures of the Islamic regime there.
