Israel just sat on the mountains outside Beirut and endlessly bombarded the city with artillery rather than go in for street to street fighting. Or their friends in the Christian militia did it for them and then the Sharon was accused of abetting their war crimes.... In both cases you have an overwhelmingly superior army on the one side so the only real strategy is to retreat to the city and/or use guerilla tactics. Then the only real question is do you surrender or continue to fight. The Iraqi Army/Republican Guard is of course much better than anyone in Lebanon was but with no air power not up to fighting the US. The US claims they have been betting on them surrendering/defecting etc. we will just have to see if that happens or only after a long siege...
