No not at all. In fact Assad was in Tehran a few days ago but only for hours and came back very disappointed...but that is not the real reason why Syria would not have been a good choice.

1) Syrians (the people) do not like America, Iranians do.

2) It is inherently impossible to get Syrian regime's support. That regime is a Ba'thist, just like Iraq's. Iranian regime is a lot easier to deal with.

3) Syria has zero, zilch, nadda, influence in Iraq. Iran has plenty.

4) Syria does not have the long border that Iran has.

5) From Syria to Baghdad is as long if not longer than Kuwait to Baghdad. From Iran it is only one hour.

6) Mega bonus, getting Iran to come along would have been a great victory for the reformers and would have brought considerable change in Iran without us needing exert much effort.

I could go on, but I think this is enough.
