Re: He also challenged the US to explain its U-turn on whether a Turkish deployment was desirable.

"About two weeks ago, [the Americans] were completely in agreement to move into Iraq together with us," Mr Shirin said.

"All of a sudden after the Turkish parliament decided to deny the resolution to open the northern border... they find a Turkish presence in the north unacceptable."

Well, now that the occupation of Iraq gets messier by the day, the US military needs the Kurds more than ever to prop up its PR campaign... Moreover, the Kurds are eager to join and do the dirty work --the US could use the Kurds just as the Russkies used the Tajiks in Afghanistan (against the Pashtun). I mean, it doesn't take an expert spinmeister to figure out that US opinion will be less sensitive to the Kurds' death toll than to the Americans' one... Of course, such a scenario doesn't fit in with Turkey's regional interests... If the Kurds get into the action, they'll do it at a price. The Kurds' endgame calls for a UN-recognized Kurdistan --and the Turks know it.
