Richard,

Applied Voice Technology has this to say regarding Internet Telephony:

"Delivering voice over the internet has been a technology that has
received much attention over the past twelve months. As a definition, the market typically refers to internet telephony as the
use of the internet for the transmission of live voice traffic/conversations. Probe Research estimates that 34% of voice
conversation will take place over packet networks by the year
2005. There is a long list of vendors who are deploying products in
an attempt to capture a portion of this potentially huge market."

"Internet Telephony however, is the least defined and most
hurdle-bound technology of all the intersections between CTI and
the internet. The problems include transmission quality, lack of
standards implementation (this is improving), equipment
requirements at the desktop, etc. There are several products that
have been released, but deployment has been limited to the early
adopters and experimentalists. The good news is that there are
some very big companies that want to see this technology succeed,
including Microsoft and Netscape Communications. The risks of
utilizing internet telephony throughout a business (except for
niche locations) are too great at this time in the technology life
cycle. However, AVT firmly believes that the issues and problems
will be resolved over the next few years and this technology will
find its place in the corporate world. AVT's intentions are to
closely monitor the evolution of this segment of technology and to
implement it into the AVT product line once the technology
matures."

The foregoing is contained in a white paper called "Computer Telephony & The Internet," which can be found at AVTC's Web site. The URL for the white paper is appliedvoice.com
