Wishful thinking is a universal human failing. U.S. and EU aid would be a temporary help, but Kurdish oil would permanently improve their economic/political power.

They can smell that oil, they can taste it, it's just outside the grasp of their outstretched fingertips. A little Resolve, a little Vigor, and the prize is theirs, is what they are telling themselves. Never mind that there are 7 armies eyeing the same war-booty.
