I read the entire Decline and Fall once. I guess it did me some good but all I can remember now is Gibbon's remark on how human beings can get used to a very wide range of climates--a characteristic that we share with few other animals besides the pig. Also, a remark about some emperor or other ruler who had a huge library and a harem of several hundred wives, and "to judge by the productions he left behind, both were intended for use rather than ostentation." Maybe you recall who that was.
