Speaking of 'barbarians'... there is such a thing as winning a battle, and losing the larger war (i.e., the war for global opinion and support in opposing terrorism). It's know as a 'Pyrrhic Victory'. If we start 'carpet bombing Baghdad' then we can kiss away several 'friendly' governments, and lose the support of others such as Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Pakistan... not to mention the rest of NATO. Fundamentalist regimes could over-throw Western leaning governments, and the World could turn it's back on us. The economic costs alone could be catastrophic.
