Kyros, being one for analogies as an aid to thinking, there does seem to be a spot of WWI about the whole scene.
Somebody got assassinated - that was in Serbia [the Prime Minister or somebody important enough to get a big bunch of people on the street]. Then, Turkey is front and centre again. There are shifting alliances around Europe and into Russia, Georgia and into Asia where a militaristic nuclear-armed regime is flexing its muscles, albeit narrowly constrained by China, Russia and South Korea, but China is doing a bit of flexing itself, just quietly.
I think it's time for a League of Nations after this war to end all wars, at least in the middle east if not in darkest Africa and South America, is finished, with freedom for everybody.
Here's me trying to run a cyberspace revolution and the bloody monkeys in the jungle are shrieking around in the trees, fighting over the bananas and stuff. Nuclear armed monkeys. Great!
We could cut straight to WWII at the same time, with Vichy France supplying Germany with nukes and between them [and Belgium] they could totally dominate Europe and have another go at Stalingrad.
This is much more fun than we could have hoped for. The news media have got some great stories to run with. Everyone gets to beat their chests, strut and wear silly hats, making grandiloquent speeches and puffing themselves with importance.
But I'm getting ahead of the reality. I'm sure everything will be back to 'normal' in a couple of weeks when Saddam and co have been removed from power. But already, my hopes for a Globalstar Orbit War [110 minutes] has been shown as wishful thinking, the same as the Globalstar promise [as far as the shareholders were concerned anyway - the system works fine].
Why not Bulgaria as a USA base? Maybe Georgia is conveniently close to Moscow and other Russian forces. Not to mention Iranian. There's a bigger picture than Iraq and Saddam.

PS: I noticed on a map that Aleppo is just up the road from the current dramas. My father started his 4 year long WWII travels around the middle east and across Africa and up Italy at Aleppo. That's a lot longer than 110 minutes. Maybe even in internet time the war is going to last a while. |
