New Focus Introduces a New Laser Source for Telecom Test and Measurement Applications
Monday March 24, 5:07 pm ET
New 2.5-GHz Modulated 1310-nm Laser Source Ideal for Characterizing Components and for Breadboard Systems

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 24, 2003-- New Focus, Inc. (NASDAQ:NUFO - News), a leading provider of photonics and microwave technology solutions, today announced the addition of a new compact laser source at 1310 nanometers for test and measurement applications. The new Model 1732 can be directly modulated up to bandwidths of 2.5 gigahertz (GHz) and is ideal for use in laboratory applications or for characterizing 2.5-Gbit/s data communications components. This new offering directly addresses the lack of commercially available directly modulated high-speed laser sources.
"This modulated laser source complements our current line of leading photonic detectors and laser sources," said Dr. Nadim Maluf, vice president of the Photonics Tools and Instruments product group of New Focus, Inc. "Just like the Model 1780 10Gbit/s VCSEL source at 850 nm, the new Model 1732 1310-nm laser source enables engineers to streamline test-and-measurement processes by addressing the need for test-and-measurement lasers in the data communications arena and enabling faster time-to-market for new product development."

Key benefits of the new Model 1732 source include the use of high-performance microwave circuitry that ensures clean delivery of the electrical input to the laser chip and results in clean eye diagrams. The device also complements -- and can link with -- the New Focus Model 1592 3.5GHz receiver. With the Model 1732 serving as a base reference, the two devices in tandem enable testing of the fiber itself.

The laser source is the latest addition to the New Focus photonics tool chest. Photonics products manipulate light - the flow of photons - just like electronic products manipulate electricity - the flow of electrons. Photonics represent a key enabling technology in a variety of industries, including semiconductor IC processing, biotechnology, oil well recovery, industrial sensing and telecommunications.
