The first french colony here was on Sable Island ... quite a story, here's a page with a brief on it - expage.com ... so reminiscent of other local stories, lol -

'Chaos developed as law and order broke down
and the civilians refused to obey the soldiers. When a murdering spree
began, commanding officer Querbonyer and his troops were the first to die.

The desperate men fortified their shelters from the violent storms with
driftwood and lumber from a wrecked ship. Seal skins and horse hides were
hung on the walls of their homes. Among the food they had to eat was raw
horseflesh; and there was no fire. Snares were set for birds and men who
were caught stealing from them were found dead. Quarrels were frequent
and month by month the graves on the island increased as the men fought
among themselves.

Finally, in 1603, the king remembered the colony
