If anyone's watching CBC tonight (I know your all glued to CNN..lol), take in the documentary on passionate eye tonight "Oil in Iraq: Curse or Blessing?", pretty interesting historical perspective.

Oil in Iraq: Curse or Blessing? Oil is a powerful force that has shaped the fate of Iraq for decades. The country holds the planet's second largest oil reserves and has held out the promise of prosperity for a nation. But it has also been at the root of political unrest and conflict for decades. The documentary looks at the question of how a nation possessing such riches has seen its population reduced to poverty. It traces the impact of Iraq's oil on the country's politics and people, from the end of the First World War when Iraqi oil was the property of European and American interests. It examines the effect of Western domination of the oil business throughout the post-war boom in the 1950s that eventually led to a wave of nationalization throughout the region. But oil wealth brought with it political instability. In 10 years, there were no less than six coups in Iraq. Now many Iraqis only survive thanks to the UN food-for-oil program established after the first Gulf War. And once again, it is oil that has becomes a pivotal issue as Iraq faces yet another war.
