Jacob, I agree. As a former dove converted to cautious hawk, I was sold on this war partly because I believed the Iraqi people wanted to be free of Hussein. I don't see that at all. Even in the southern towns where Hussein is weakest, there is real hatred of Americans & resistance.

Also, it seems that Rumsfeld has sent in forces that are far too light. Apparantly, every general told him so but he thought they were all behind the times. Check out this article. Rumsfeld thought this would be slightly harder than Afghanistan:

In addition, The FT is quoting British military personnel who say the US greatly underestimated the resistance we would see:

I support the troops & we have to give them whatever they need to win this war. These are very early days & this could be over in 2 weeks. However, I was led to believe the Iraqis wanted to be rid of Hussein. This was bad intelligence & Americans will pay with their lives. Rumsfeld's inability to see that this is a different war from Afghanistan is incompetence in my opinion.
