I was just now watching Maria Bartiroma on CNBC and she had back to back interviews with Gore Vidal, author, and Daniel Yergin of Cambridge Energy Research Associates.

As most here will know, Vidal is a severe critic of the aggression in Iraq, and he made the point that one of the key reasons that we attacked Iraq was to confiscate the second largest oil reserves on the planet. To my mind, this is well established fact.

Daniel Yergin, who makes his living by selling his services not only to CNBC but many petroleum industry companies, directly refuted Vidal by stating that Canada had the second largest oil reserves in the world. This astonished me. I went back into the records and found this:

According to BP, Canada has 0.6% of the world proven reserves of oil. Iraq has 11%.

What can we make of this assertion of a complete lie by a so-called "expert"? Shall we conclude that Daniel Yergin is part of a vicious disinformation campaign designed to distort the understanding of a gullible public? Or is he simply delusional?

[[Note: I fully understand that Yergin will come up with the sophistry that he's included Canada's oil shales and tar sands in his calculation. I'm wondering if he'd admit that he being utterly disingenuous since on average it takes one barrel of oil equivalent energy per barrel produced in order to extract the shale or tar sand resource.]]

Unfortunately, today the question that I have to ask all too often is this: Who isn't lying to us? It seems to be a real short list.
