Kevin, AS seems to be under the impression that McCain and Kerry are inhabiting the same political space. He is now calling Kerry a moderate and he seems to think that McCain is a liberal. McCain to the left of Kerry? I don't think so. Kerry is a liberal and McCain, while he has some views that differ from his party, is at his core a conservative. They may share similar views on some issues, such as veterans affairs, but their voting records on key issues diverge significantly.

This is supported by a review of their voting records. The two most widely referenced ratings are done by the liberal Americans for Democratic Action and the apt-named American Conservative Union. According to the ADA and the ACU, McCain and Kerry have received the following ratings over the past four years:

McCain ADA ratings
2002: 20%
2001: 40%
2000: 5%
1999: 5%

Kerry ADA ratings
2002: 85%
2001: 95%
2000: 90%
1999: 95%

McCain ACU ratings
2002: 78%
2001: 68%
2000: 81%
1999: 77%

Kerry ACU ratings
2002: 20%
2001: 4%
2000: 12%
1999: 0%

McCain has a lifetime rating of 84% from the ACU and Kerry has a 6% rating. Kennedy has a 3% lifetime rating.
