In general nobody in this world really trusts anybody else. This is not a trait exclusive to the middle east. But not trusting and mistrusting are not the same thing. You took the use of "mistrust" much further than I'd intended. I won't quibble if there is a difference between mistrust and not trusting; semantics to me. I look at the middle east in particular, although there are other areas of the world that are in the same boat. I see countries populated by different sects, different tribes, etc. without any common allegiance to a country. It is one of the reasons I don't believe "democracy" as we know it will ever be successful in this region. I also think it's great that the U.S. gives them all a common enemy; otherwise, I think they'd all just spend eternity killing each other off. Pick a middle eastern country, show me where different religious sects, different ancestral tribes ( not sure this is the right word ) but show me where they trust each other and reside peacefully and successfully. JB
