Kohap Wins Contract to Run Beijing
Networks

Seoul -- Kohap Group signed a contract with Beijing's
Telecom Management Office to operate and manage
Beijing's broadband data-exchange system as well as a
video-on-demand network to be built in the city, the company
announced July 29.
Kohap said its U.S.-based affiliate, INC Co., Ltd., was awarded the
US$3 million project, and the total is expected to grow to US$25
million in the near future.
Terms of the contract stipulate that Kohap and Beijing's Telecom
Management Office will be jointly responsible for the system's
installation, trial operation, technical maintenance and support. They will
also conduct local marketing programs.
Kohap's successful bid for the Beijing project followed intense
competition among major telecom-equipment companies, including
Siemens AG of Germany and Alcatel Telecom of France.
Company officials said Beijing's broadband data-exchange network is
based on asynchronous transfer mode technology.
The video-on-demand system will be equipped with two high-capacity
video servers and equipment to handle 2,400 subscriber ports, they
also said.
The Chinese government plans to extend the city's advanced network
system to other principal cities, including Shanghai.
