What's also interesting about that article is that American leadership is being required to come to grips with the distinct prospect that we may not be seen as "liberators" by the Sunni Arabs, most of whom directly profited and supported the Baathist regime.

Thus, it's also a distinct possibility that we'll see the US increasingly making the reasonable comparison that this particular group of civilians is complicit in Saddam's regime, just as many Germans were with regard to Hitler.

That might justify using a bit more force than previously, when it comes to the hard and bloody fight lying ahead in Baghdad.

Also, it would seem that we may see this war slow down into one of attrition and seige against Baghdad until such time that sufficient forces are in place to facilitate a costly urban assault...

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.. as well as how it plays in the international media. We'll likely see many stories coming out about Saddam's oppression of the Shiite Arabs and Kurds as well..

Bottom line, I'll be very surprised if this war is over by the end of April.

Btw, General Barry R. McCaffrey made some good points about Franks not including an Armored Cavalry Regiment to conduct screening operations to protect the main body and supply train of the 3rd ID. In essence, he accuses both Rumsfeld and Franks of violating Army doctrine. And as we watch events unfold, I can only concur.

But I do have the sense that Franks did "pad" many of these units with additional resources to provide such resources.

But only these generals really are competent to debate this issue. It will be interesting to see how this plays out over the coming weeks and what lessons (and blameworthy persons) are discovered.
