<should we "abandon" them or "nation-build"? >

You are setting up an either/or choice, a dichotomy, and (repeatedly) asking me to choose between them. I reject your assumption that abandonment (=do nothing) and nation-building (which looks indistinguishable from colonization to me) are the only two choices. And, by the way, most governments in the world, and the overwhelming majority of their citizens, also think those aren't the only two choices. And I believe that you, too, will be amenable to seeing the alternatives I have proposed. But first you are going to have to see the futility of Force, and I'm saddened at how painful that lesson is going to be for my country. I believe the U.S. will eventually lead a global coalition to victory in the War On Terrorism. But it will not be for many years, and it will be using methods almost precisely the opposite of those being used now. We can win using methods that rely on 10% Force and 90% Persuasion, rather than the other way around.
