The British prime minister's unstinting support for a U.S.-led attack to disarm and overthrow the government of Saddam Hussein in Iraq has gone from deeply unpopular to generally acceptable in the course of about three weeks. When President Bush ordered the U.S. and British forces to attack last week, the traditional sympathy for "Tommy," the mythically typical British soldier, helped rally public opinion to Blair's side. The latest YouGov war poll, published in today's Daily Telegraph newspaper, reported 56 percent of those surveyed now believe the United States and Britain are right to take military action against Iraq and that 65 percent trusted Blair to make the right decisions about the war. Both figures have risen steadily in three successive polls during the past week. But if public opinion is growing more unified, the British press is not. While generally crediting the prime minister with decency, editorialists on the island have not lost the outspoken panache that distinguishes them from their often blander counterparts on this side of the Atlantic.
