Bush was in big trouble last July. Enron was a HUGE issue and he knew if the Dems kept the Senate and had subpoena powers this could be bigger that Watergate. The biggest issue was not the millions Bush took from Enron but the phony energy crisis which helped put Bush-Cheney in power and robbed Americans of some 100 billion dollars. Only ending the day after Jeffords switched parties. Dont be naive. And yes his numbers were plumeing at that time. They dipped below 50% as I remember and the White House panicked.
