Saudis propose Iraq peace plan
Last Updated Tue, 25 Mar 2003 15:14:16

RIYADH - Saudi Arabia is trying to float a proposal to end the fighting in Iraq, Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said Tuesday.

But so far, the United States has not responded.

"I don't want to say we were rebuffed because we were not rebuffed, but nor were we given authorization that they were going with it," he said.

He did not release any details of the proposal.

Saud said now was a good time to discuss peace because both sides know the war is going to cause serious problems.

"This is a good time to stop, take a breather, see what diplomacy can bring," because the fighting "will only add to the boiling situation in the Middle East and create hatreds that will perhaps remain for a long time."
