I was referring to the hostage crisis during the Carter Administration. He didn't have anything to do with the Mossedeq/Shah coup which led to the kind of anger that engendered the hostage situation.

That's what I mean when I speak of long term foreign policy goals.

However, Venezuela is an interesting case. It seemed to me the CIA was trying to engineer another coup there although I have no proof.

I did get to talk, one night, with a high ranking official who was in the diplomatic core during the Chilean Coup. Got some interesting info. Venezuela seem hauntingly familiar. Not too many people paid much attention to it other than it took some money out of their pockets during visits to the pump.
