That's an easy one:

Because Americans don't think that their government matter since they were taught and manipulated -by a few canny men- that they are free.

Then, the US collectively reasoned, if we are free why should I chose carefully the leadership. The canny guys took over and hence the present situation.

For me is very easy to see it because to be a Brazilian you have to:

mistrust ANY authority

and be suspicious of ANY big institution.

Hence I am not easy manipulated and consider myself more free than anybody else
