I won't deny that the Iraquis and the Jews are hereditary enemies or that they US has always eyed the oil in Iraq jealously. But if we made Iraq a non-aligned state with no pretension of ME control or getting nukes, would there be a war? I think not. If we made them, even as opposed to Israel as Saudi Arabia is, but as incapable militarily, would there be a war? Again, I don't think so. The Jewish/Israeli question is a thorn alright, but no more so than fundamental Muslim power, the shakiness of the Sheikdoms, or the brutal repressiveness of the non-fundamentalist regimes in the ME. The ME is a powder keg with or without Israel. Israel is the focus, oil is both the arbiter, and fuel of power conflict, but the age old disorganization and medieval corruption of the political process in the ME is the real problem that gives rise to the continued turmoil.
Both the US and great Britain by successive interferences with good government in the ME over the past 80 years, have sown the seeds of the discord. Now they are reaping the whirlwind. It is high time we supported democratic self-determination in countries in the ME instead of continuing to support strongman dictators because the purport to support US interests. Osama Bin Laden, and Sadaam Hussein, we must remember, were two such proteges.
I think the people most to blame for the ME situation today, are Allen and Foster Dulles.
