Iran has the potential of becoming our friend and ally. It has the foundations of democracy in place, and once the ayatollahs are gone, it will probably be one of the few genuine democracies in the area. I think lumping it into the axis of evil was an extremely stupid move on the part of the Bush administration. It strengthened the ayatollahs' hand and weakened the budding democratic resistance.

This is simply not the case. The axis-of-evil speech communicated to the democratic reformers in Iran that the US understands the situation in Iran and that the US supports the people of Iran not the leaders.

It killed the moderate Islamist reform movement but it was already on it's death bed. I posted a web site from the Student Democratic Reformers of Iran on 'Through a Glass Darkly' a couple of days ago. You should check it out, read in their own words what is happening and what is not happening.

Like Regean's Evil Empire speech, the Axis of Evil speech spoke to the people not the leaders. There is hope and you have a powerful ally.
