The axis of evil talk strengthened the ayatollahs' hand because it classified Iran, the country, as the enemy. Iran fought the Taliban, by the way, and was very scrupulous about distancing itself from Al Queda. They have a hand in helping Hezbollah, but that's their security apparatus which is controlled by the ayatollahs, exactly the part of Iran that the reformists are fighting against.
