CB, they're correct in the newly defined importance of Basra but, in my estimation, for the wrong reasons. I believe their first 2 points are questionable; the 3rd though is right on.

The insurrection of the Shiites is something we need to support; so, although Basra had little importance a few days ago, now it does.

First of all, they were left in the breach once before; we can't afford to do that again. We've asked these people to stand up to a dictator which takes great courage; to leave them on their own would be inhumane in my estimation.

Second, if we want internal insurrection in other parts of Iraq, it is important that others know we aided those in Basra. Failure to do so will only ensure that others do not come forward; to them it will simply be history repeating itself.

Baghdad will always be there, it's not going anywhere.
