BBC reporting that 70-120 armored Iraqi vehicles seen leaving Basra.

>>Iraqi convoy breaks out of Basra

A large number of tanks and armoured personnel carriers are heading south east from Basra towards the al-Faw peninsula.

BBC correspondent Clive Myrie says this has been seen as a possible counter-attack by the Iraqi army to recapture ground lost over the last two or three days, or possibly a tactical retreat out of Basra because of the possibility of an uprising in the north of the city.

British radar has spotted the column of between 70 and 120 vehicles following the coast road along the Shatt al-Arab waterway and a British drone has been launched to monitor the movement.

Our correspondent says a number of fighter jets have also been scrambled to engage the column.

Units of the British Royal Marines 40 Commando are positioned along this road. <<
