As a practical matter, it is considerably easier to reconcile Islam and Science than you may think. Most of the battles between Science and Christianity never happened and will not happen in the Muslim world. Quite simply Islam clearly and directly commands Muslims to seek knowledge. More importantly, Islam never mistook scientific positions with theological ones the way that the Church did (eg. making an edict that Sun revolves around Earth)...so what is the problem? The problem is that it is always easier to rule over the ignorant than the educated. So there is a bias in many religious circles to prevent people from being better informed. This is not unlike the bias in America to keep the public ignorant of what foreign perspective is. The less the public knows, the easier it is to control them. It is the same everywhere...the solution is what Jacob suggested; create alternatives that are not anti-American. Keep in mind that those alternatives will fail if they are overtly pro-American. You just have to agree that although an informed independent is is not as good as a dumb pro-western one, it is still a lot better than a dumb one that is anti-western.
