Hi Ted,

Regarding Putin: I don’t think he has had any type of ‘awakening’, other than realizing Bush was really going into Iraq. And i sure don’t think he’s a nice guy that suddenly wants to save the USA out of the goodness of his heart. I understand and believe you when you say that he is only about furthering his own ends. His not wanting to see our troops get nuked would be completely in his and his country’s best interest. The consequences for him and his country could be ‘grave’ if our army gets nuked.

Notice that he hasn’t come out and said WHY he doesn’t want us to go to war or invade Baghdad, only that there would be ‘disastrous consequences’ or some similar such phrase. He could never come out and tell us that Iraq has nukes. And he will look like a hero for trying so hard to stop us from going to war.

He might not even have been aware that rogue elements in Russia had sold Iraq the nukes until recently.

His loss of lucrative Iraqi contracts would have mostly been made up for with the guarantee that the USA would honor most of them in return for Russia’s cooperation in this war.

All that being said, i understand that Russia wouldn’t want the USA to be on its ‘doorstep’. I understand that Putin does have incentives to foil the invasion of Iraq. It’s just that those incentives shouldn’t have been so strong as to risk the good relationship Russia so desperately wants with the USA.

Regarding Saddam’s willingness to use nukes on his own land:

I would only envision him using nukes as a last resort to stop invading forces. He knows he’s finished if he gets captured. And he’s already demonstrated his lack of regard for any human life (other than his own). For this reason, i hope he’s already dead and other people are making the decision on whether to use the nukes. But i don’t have much faith that his successors will choose not to use the nukes either.

In short, i hope i’m wrong about the whole thing. But i still have this bad feeling in my gut about going into Baghdad.

best regards,
-gru
