SuSE On Itanium To Support National Supercomputing Grid

SuSE said Wednesday its Linux software has been chosen for parts of the "TeraGrid," a scientific computing system accessible to researchers across the U.S. The SuSE software will run on Itanium 2 systems.
SuSE also said its Linux for Itanium shipped Wednesday.
The TeraGrid is designed to provide resources for studies of the life sciences, climate modeling, and other disciplines. The Distributed Terascale Facility (DTF), funded by the National Science Foundation, is a joint project of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, the San Diego Supercomputing Center, Argonne National Laboratory, and the California Institute of Technology.
SuSE estimated the value of the deal at several hundred thousand dollars. It's being done in partnership with IBM Global Services, which is deploying clusters of SuSE Linux systems at the four DTF sites.
The servers will be based on current and future Itanium 2 processors. IBM supercomputing software will handle clustering and file management. Myricom's Myrinet interconnect will enable interprocessor communications.
The system will have a storage capacity of more than 600 Terabytes.
