Oil fires out in 3-7 days in Iraq's south Rumaila

DUBAI, March 26 (Reuters) - Kuwaiti and U.S. firefighters could snuff out all oil fires in Iraq's vast South Rumaila field within a week after dust storms choked three blazing wellheads, a Kuwait official said on Wednesday.

Only three oil wells are now alight in the giant field responsible for nearly half of Iraq's overall production, said Kuwait Petroleum Co (KOC) spokesman Sheikh Talal Khaled al Sabah.

"It will now take three to seven days to put them out," he told Reuters, cutting back on the estimated timetable for the operation, which U.S. and Kuwaiti officials earlier said would take up to one month.

"We have received news that three wells have extinguished themselves because of the dust and weather conditions," he told Reuters.
