I don't think we're there for power but I do believe Oil and Israel play an issue. As I see it currently, Oil is a strategic national interest. I don't say this in the sense that we should invade a country to steal the oil. However, I think we have a national interest to make sure that the free flow of oil is secure and in the hands of nations that takes care of their people and society so as to not create a culture that becomes dangerous to the rest of the world. In that sense many of the oil rich nations are a concern because most of them have not used the money to build an infrastructure that fosters an educated and financially stable society. It is true that using this basis for conflict the U.S. could attack any of a number of countries. But given the location, history and current concern over terror there are reasons why Iraq makes sense. I don't view Saudi Arabia or Iran as a lost cause in the same way I do Iraq. As long as Saddam is in power we have to worry about what he would do to us IF he acquired a nuke or even a good chemical delivery method. Clearly the entire middle east poses a risk and I do believe we're going to use Iraq as a quick strike type of base to hit terrorist cells in places such as Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran etc. in the future. I think having military positions in Iraq is just part of a much broader campaign to use fairly precise targeting for these groups. Unlike many (well at least people who will admit it) I actually agree with you that the funding of Israel and our relationship with them is a big part of this problem and should be reviewed as a policy. Our funding of that entire region should be reviewed and eliminated! If these governments in the middle east would use the oil proceeds to build societies they could have some of the most wealthy, advanced cultures on earth. So I blame them but I also blame us for rewarding their behavior with "buddy money." Years of failed middle east policy have led to this event but Saddam is a risk that we can't afford to take as a society. From his demise will come many good things if done properly. So far so good imo
